1 (one) Research Fellowship (BI) for a PhD Student
Offer Description
1 (one) Research Fellowship (BI) for a Ph
D Student
- Scientific Area: Agricultural Sciences, Agricultural and Food Biotechnology
- Admission requirements: Have a Master degree, as well as laboratory experience with molecular Biology protocols. Bioinformatic skills including sequence analysis.
- Additional optional skills and qualifications: experience in plant nucleic acid extraction and volatiles extraction; bioinformatic skills with NGS data.
- Contracting requirements: Presentation of the academic qualifications and/or diplomas, if applicable. Enrolment in Ph
D course. - Work plan: Aromatic and medicinal plants are very interesting considering the compounds they produce some of them with important properties for humans, including medicinal applications. Within the biodiversity found in Mediterranean climates, where Portugal is included, Thymus caespititius Brot is an interesting plant due to the diverse volatiles and essential oils rich in terpenes it produces. This species in understudied, and it is known that in the Azores archipelago this species presents a high variability in its chemotypes, while in mainland Portugal and Madeira a low chemical variability is found. In this study we propose to study the transcriptomics and chemotypes of some important accessions of this species. The plant collection has already been performed for mainland Portugal and Azores, and the work will proceed with RNA extraction followed by sequencing (NGS) to compare with the volatiles of the same plants. The work plan comprises the following tasks: 1) RNA extraction with good quality from leafy material collected and kept in an ultrafreeze at -80ºC. 2) Sequencing through NGS outsourcing and interpretation of data from bioinformatic analysis. 3) Hydrodistillation of leafy material already collected and kept in a freeze at -20ºC. 4) GC and GC/MS (Gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry) analyses 5) Data interpretation and integration to understand genetic polymorphisms and chemotypes.
- Place of work: The work will be developed at thec
E3c – Centre for Ecology, Evolution and Environmental Changes, Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, under the scientific supervision of Professor Maria Helena Trindade Donato. - Fellowship duration: This position is initially opened for 6 months due to start in October 2025. The fellowship contract may be potentially renewed until the end of the project, in accordance with the provisions of Regulation of Research Fellowships from the Foundation for Science and Technology, I. P.
