(Associate) Banking and Finance Lawyer (German speaker preferred) – based in Luxembourg
European Investment Bank (EIB) – European Union’s bank – invites applications for a full‑time temporary Associate Banking and Finance Lawyer position in Luxembourg. The role is based at our Luxembourg headquarters and requires regular office presence.
Purpose
The Northern Europe Division deals with legal documentation and issues for projects in Austria, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Sweden and the EFTA countries. The Lawyer will assist the Head of Division and the Head of Department in providing legal support to operational directorates across these countries.
Operating Network
The Lawyer will work under the general authority of the Head of Division, collaborate with colleagues in the Division, and may travel for negotiations and contract signing.
Responsibilities
- Draft and negotiate legal documentation for lending and financing operations, including:
- projects in the aforementioned countries, notably bilateral loans with banking counterparts, public entities and major corporates
- project finance operations with support from external legal counsels
- structured finance operations, including securitisations
- other financing forms, including risk‑sharing structures, on a funded and unfunded basis
- Provide legal advisory support, conclude contracts, and complete all related legal formalities.
- Advise on structuring, drafting of documents, and monitoring post‑signature events such as loan restructuring.
- Manage contacts and negotiations with external counsel and clients.
- Prepare terms of reference for external counsel, supervise their work when necessary.
- Complete administrative formalities with clients that have legal implications.
- Undertake legal research and studies on emerging issues in EIB operations and new financial instruments/templates.
- Develop and maintain relationships within EIB, with clients and external advisers, and represent EIB externally.
Qualifications
- University degree in law (minimum Bachelor, preferably Master). Qualification in German or Austrian law is desirable.
- Minimum 3 years of relevant professional experience, preferably in bank lending, project finance, capital markets, or an in‑house department of a reputable law firm.
- Knowledge of civil and commercial law of a jurisdiction relevant to the Division’s work is an advantage.
- Significant experience drafting and negotiating contractual documentation in English and/or German, especially finance documents.
- Experience in structured finance and/or project finance/PPP transactions is an advantage.
- Very good knowledge of standard computer tools.
- Excellent written and spoken English. Ability to draft and negotiate in German is an advantage.
