Title:
B- – Research Grant (BI) – 24/09/2025 – ACTON – . PEX
Funding Reference Number:
. PEX
Summary:
A research position for one Research Grant (“Bolsa de Investigação“) is open at Instituto de Telecomunicações, in the scope of the Project ACTON – Accelerating the Future 5G/6G Deployments with Millimeter Wave Integrated Circuit Interfaces Generated by Deep Computer Vision. This project is funded by FCT/MECI through national funds and when applicable
- funded EU funds under the . PEX project reference.
Scientific Area:
Basic Sciences and Enabling Technologies
Group:
Integrated Circuits - Lx
Work Objectives:
This work plan addresses the problem of analog and
- frequency (RF) integrated circuits (ICs) design automation for deep nanometer CMOS technologies. Deep nanometer technology nodes enable the design of highly integrated systems for consumer and
- market applications where complex analog/RF blocks play a decisive role. The increased design complexity due to spatial stochastic and temporal deterministic unreliability effects, and also, stringent layout design rules demand new design automation solutions beyond the actual
-
-
- art. The proposed work plan focuses on the thorough exploration of innovative generative machine learning (ML) techniques toward more efficient, robust, and autonomous analog/RF IC design tools. The work plan of this research grant builds over the most recent developments made at ICG-Lx group on electronic design automation tools for analog, RF and
- wavelength IC design. It focuses on the automation of analog circuit design utilizing diffusion models and/or other
-
-
- art generative artificial intelligence (AI) techniques, including:
(1) the first part encompasses the development of a diffusion model for device sizing, with a transformer backbone, that automatically interacts with an
-
- shelf circuit simulator (for improved training accuracy) or
- fidelity surrogate model and sizes the circuits when provided with a set of requested performances;
(2) the second part covers automatic layout generation techniques, the major goal is for the diffusion model to be able to predict not only the sizing, but also the placement coordinates of the different cells that have to be placed on the layout; and
(3) methodologies will be tested on
-
-
- art analog and RF IC structures, and possibly, validated through the fabrication of IC prototypes in deep nanometer CMOS technologies, e. g. , 65 or 40 nanometers.
Place of work:
The work will be developed at the premises of Instituto de Telecomunicações – Lisboa, under the supervision of Professor Dr. Ricardo Martins.
Duration:
9 months, with the possibility of renewal (according to the regulations defined by FCT). Start date: November 1st, 2025 or soon thereafter.
Required Documents:
- Cover letter explaining the interest in the position and relevant background;
- Detailed Curriculum Vitae with transcripts,
- Copy of the relevant certificates (Copy of the Degree Certificate(s), if applicable);
- Proof of enrollment (or proof of acceptance) in a higher education course or declaration of honour confirming that complies with the conditions to enroll in the required/preferable higher education course.
NOTE: The proof of enrollment in a higher education course must be made until the contract is signed.
Apply online clicking on the “Apply Now” button in this form submissions will not be considered. (The cover letter and the CV are mandatory documents in the online application platform)
All the selection process is conducted through the IT web portal. No actions outside this platform are valid.
Application Period:

Admission Requirements:
Research grants are intended:
- for students enrolled in a
- conferring course to carry out R&D activities with the aim to consolidate their scientific training through the development of research work leading to the attainment of the respective academic degree or completion of the course (integrated or not in R&D projects).
- for students enrolled in courses that do not confer an academic degree but which are integrated in an educational project of a higher education institution and are developed in association or cooperation with one or several R&D units.
In what concerns the admission requirements for this research grant in particular:
- The candidate should meet all the legal requirements to be able to start or to be enrolled in a Ph. D. program in Electrical and Computer Engineering under the supervision of Professor Ricardo Martins;
- Background in Electrical Engineering / Computer Engineering / Mathematics and expertise in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Electronic Design Automation or Analog and Radio Frequency IC Design are preferred.
- C2 (30%)
Motivation letter evaluation (it should provide a brief description of and motivation for the research topic the candite would like to pursuit)
Candidates may be interviewed for clarification of any aspect related to the above criteria
Each criteria, and the final classification F will be evaluated in a scale (0-20). The candidates will be ordered according to:
F = C1 x 70% + C2 x 30%
In case of a tie, the tied candidates will be ordered according to C1, then C2. . .
The Jury has the right to not admit any of the candidates that applied for this position whenever they consider that no candidate meets the minimum requirements for the position.
