The National Institute of Health Dr. Ricardo Jorge, I. P. (INSA), Department of Infectious Diseases, is opens a call for the attribution of a Research Grant for graduate degree – 1 vacancy – to candidates (M/F) in the scope of the “VEBIS Consortium – laboratory component” , with the reference Ref. VEBIS2/DDI/01/2025, funded under specific contract VEBIS OJ/2021/DPR/12924 with the company Epiconcept SARL, which is the consortium coordinator and responsible for the contract with the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control - “Vaccine Effectiveness, Burden and Impact Studies (VEBIS) of COVID-19 and Influenza”.

Admission requirements:
Students enrolled in a master's degree programme in biology, microbiology, virology or related fields, aiming to consolidate their scientific training through the development of research work leading to the attainment of the respective academic degree, whether or not integrated into R&D projects.
Languages ENGLISH Level Excellent
Additional Information
The amount of the scholarship is in accordance with the table of values for national scholarships awarded by the FCT contained in the research scholarship regulations. The scholarship holder also benefits from Voluntary Social Security and Personal Accident Insurance or equivalent.
Eligibility criteria
Preferred requirements:
- Good knowledge and experience in performing laboratory procedures for the diagnosis of respiratory viral agents;
- Experience in the field of molecular biology, preferably in the preparation of samples for genomic sequencing;
- Knowledge of the use of bioinformatics tools for the analysis of genomic sequences of respiratory viruses, particularly for the coronavirus group;
- Basic knowledge of the use of georeferencing computer tools;
- Good knowledge of English (written and spoken);
- Skills in data analysis and scientific writing;
- High sense of responsibility, organisation and
- oriented work;
- Ability to implement, develop and validate new laboratory procedures and technologies;
- Good interpersonal, communication and teamwork skills, multinational and multidisciplinary;
- Immediate availability for
- site work;
Selection process
Candidates who do not meet the admission requirements referred to in this Notice will be excluded. Candidates who do not submit an academic qualification certificate indicating their final grade will also be excluded. The assessment will focus on the candidate's academic background and professional experience in the areas indicated above. In the first phase, the candidate's CV and motivation will be evaluated. Subsequently, candidates who obtain a score of at least 16 on a scale of 0 to 20 in this first evaluation will be invited to an interview to assess their knowledge and skills. The final score will be based on 50% for the curriculum evaluation and 50% for the interview.

Work plan:
The scholarship holder will be responsible for activities related to laboratory work and data analysis within the scope of the VEBIS project.
The scholarship holder's duties will be:
I. Carrying out data collection and management activities for the genomic analysis of respiratory viruses, provided by members of the VEBIS project;
II. Performing laboratory procedures for the laboratory diagnosis and characterisation of respiratory viruses;
III. Performing laboratory procedures for the preparation of biological samples for genomic sequencing;
IV. Managing databases and keeping records for the maintenance of biological sample biobanks;
V. Analysing genomic sequencing data using bioinformatics tools;
VI. Preparing presentations of results at scientific meetings, writing reports and scientific articles;
Workplace:
The work will be carried out at the National Reference Laboratory for Influenza and Other Respiratory Viruses of the Department of Infectious Diseases of the National Institute of Health Dr. Ricardo Jorge, IP.
Scientific Guidance:
The work will be carried out under the scientific guidance of Dr Raquel Guiomar, Senior Technical Health Advisor at the National Institute of Health Dr Ricardo Jorge, IP.
Duration of the scholarship:
The scholarship, scheduled to begin on 1 October 2025, will last for 12 months, with the possibility of extension for a further 12 months.
Composition of the Selection Panel:
The Panel consists of the Chair, Dr Raquel Guiomar, Senior Health Technician at INSA, Dr Nuno Verdasca, Senior Health Technician at INSA, and Dr Ausenda Cristina Nelson Machado, Senior Technician at INSA (full members). Dr. Jorge Machado, INSA Researcher, will be the alternate member.
