Offer Description

A call for applications is open for a Research Initiation Grant (BII) under the Project “0049_NATUR_FAB_2_E - Promotion of specialization intelligent, industrial transition and entrepreneurship through new materials based on endogenous resources compatible with additive manufacturing technologies of large format”, with funding from the “Interreg VI A España - Portugal (POCTEP) 2021-2027 Program”.

1. Scientific area: Mechanical Engineering or related areas (CNAEF area: 520)

2. Admission requirements:

• Candidates must be enrolled in a master’s degree program in Mechanical Engineering or related areas;
• Present a curriculum vitae with specific training in subjects related to the project’s work plan;
• Candidates must have one or more of the following technical skills:
• Experience in developing projects in the area of polymeric materials, preferably with natural fiber reinforcement;
• Knowledge of manufacturing processes, particularly additive manufacturing processes;

Candidates are also expected to have:

high motivation and capacity for teamwork; proficiency in English, both oral and written.

Work plan & Goals

• The grant holder’s activities will include: Production of filaments reinforced with natural fibers.
• Production of composite material specimens using additive manufacturing.
• Experimental tests to characterize the mechanical, thermal and chemical properties of the material developed.
• Preparation of technical reports.

3. Goals:

The basic aim is for the grant holder to contribute to the project actions, notably production of filaments and specimens, and to carry out experimental tests to obtain PLA filaments reinforced with natural fibres and characterize these materials.

Place of work & Supervision

The work will be carried out at ESTi
G IPB, under the scientific supervision of João Rocha.

Duration

The grant will have an initial duration of 3 months, starting on 01/12/2025, with the possibility of renewal up to a maximum of 6 months, including the initial period.

Remuneration

The amount of the grant corresponds to 651. 12€ per month, according to the table of values of the grants awarded by FCT, I. P. in the country. Grant holders will be covered by personal accident insurance and, if they are not covered by any social protection scheme, may join the voluntary social insurance scheme under the terms of the Code of Contributory Schemes of the Social Security System. The grant will be paid monthly by bank transfer.

Selection methods & Assessment

The selection methods will be:

• Curriculum evaluation — 50% (suitability, average of the UC completed in the bachelor’s and master’s programs; additional training; proven professional experience)
• Interview — 50% (knowledge of the project; motivation; presentation of ideas, innovation, and proactivity)
• The jury may decide not to award the grant if there are no candidates with a final score of 9. 5 or higher.

Publication of results

The communications and final results of the evaluation will be made public through the IPB’s application submission portal or, if necessary, via email notification.

Candidates must:

• be enrolled in a master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related areas;

• present a CV with specific training in topics related to the project’s work plan;

Candidates must have one or more of the following technical skills:

• experience in developing projects in the area of composite materials, preferably with natural fiber reinforcement;

• knowledge of manufacturing processes, particularly additive manufacturing processes;

Applicants must master the following languages:

• Portuguese: Mother Tongue;

• English: level good (oral and written).
