Who are you?
We are looking for a motivated Database Administrator to join our IT team based in Lisbon. This role will report to our Dev
Ops Tech Lead and join the Cloud Engineering Team, focusing heavily on managing, optimizing, and securing the organization’s databases across both managed cloud services and containerized environments.
Database Administrators are responsible for managing and optimizing complex database systems in cloud and containerized environments, with a strong focus on performance, reliability, and scalability. They are highly skilled individuals in monitoring, backup and recovery, security compliance, and
- functional collaboration to define data architecture and operational best practices.
The main responsibilities of the successful candidate include:
- Database Administration: Manage and optimize SQL Server (Managed Instance) on Azure, Postgre
SQL on Kubernetes, and Elasticsearch on Kubernetes clusters. - Performance Tuning: Proactively analyze query performance, identify bottlenecks, and recommend improvements to support
- availability and
- throughput environments. - Observability: Work with cloud engineers to define and maintain metrics, alerts, and dashboards using tools like Prometheus, Grafana, and the ELK stack to ensure visibility and reliability of database systems.
- Networking Awareness: Understand cloud networking components such as virtual networks, subnets, DNS, and routing to better diagnose and monitor distributed databases running in Kubernetes.
- Backup and Recovery: Implement and validate backup/restore strategies and disaster recovery plans for managed and containerized databases.
- Security and Compliance: Ensure data security and compliance by applying best practices in access control, encryption, and audit logging.
- Collaboration: Partner with developers and other infrastructure teams to define
- related architecture, deployment standards, and operational practices. - Documentation: Create and maintain documentation for database standards, deployment procedures, troubleshooting guides, and performance baselines.
What can you bring to the table?
Education : Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field. Master's degree preferred.
Experience : Proven experience of at least 3-5 years as a DBA or in a similar role.
Technical Skills :
- Experience managing SQL Server (preferably Azure SQL Managed Instance) and Postgre
SQL databases. - Hands-on experience with Postgre
SQL and Elasticsearch in Kubernetes environments. - Strong understanding of database performance tuning and query optimization.
- Familiarity with observability tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, and the ELK stack (Elasticsearch, Logstash, Kibana).
- Understanding of Azure networking concepts such as v
Net, subnets, DNS, private endpoints, and peering. - Experience implementing High Availability and Disaster Recovery solutions for databases.
- Experience with backup/restore strategies in both
- native and containerized environments. - Excellent troubleshooting and
- cause analysis skills in distributed systems.
Nice to have:
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform or Bicep.
- Familiarity with Helm, Kustomize, and Kubernetes troubleshooting tools (e. g. , kubectl, k9s).
- Scripting skills in Bash, Power
Shell, or Python for automation. - Exposure to CI/CD pipelines and how databases fit into deployment processes.
- Awareness of data governance, compliance, and data protection best practices.
- Basic knowledge of application development or how developers interact with databases (e. g. , ORMs, connection pooling).
