EIB Trainee - Operations Directorate - Advisory - Financial Institutions Division - based in Luxembourg
This position is based at our Luxembourg headquarters and requires regular office presence. The European Investment Bank (EIB) offers you the opportunity to live and work in a truly international and multi‑cultural environment. The EIB seeks to recruit a TRAINEE for its Operations Directorate (OPS) – Financial Institutions Division (FID) – Climate and Urban Unit (CLIM & URB) at its headquarters in Luxembourg. Duration: 5 months (fixed start date: 1st March 2026), with possible extension up to 6 months if required by the university. Only applicants from Member States or candidate countries (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, Turkey and Ukraine) are eligible. Erasmus+ programmes that overlap the traineeship will not be considered. Please limit your applications to a maximum of three traineeships; only the first three will be retained.
Objective of the traineeship: support research and analysis activities of the Division in key strategic areas such as Innovation & digitalisation, security & defence, and contribute to development of new advisory assignments with the European Commission, Member States and financial institutions. The traineeship will allow you to learn about financial instruments and EU Shared Management Funds as well as gain a better understanding of wider EU programmes and EIB intermediated financing initiatives. You will work closely with experts providing financial advisory support on topics such as climate action, sustainability and financing of smaller enterprises.
Responsibilities
- Conduct desk research on national investment support programmes for SME/midcap innovation and digitalisation across EU Member States.
- Analyse and compare eligibility criteria with EIB Group standards.
- Support research and analysis in the security and defence sector.
- Prepare briefing notes, comparative reports, and presentations for internal use.
- Assist with other research and analytical tasks as required by the team.
- Contribute to drafting internal documents for the initiation, implementation, and reporting of advisory assignments.
Academic Qualifications and Professional Skills
- Final year of studies or university degree preferably in Economics, Finance, Banking, Business Administration, or other related disciplines.
- First experience in banking or EU institutions considered as an advantage.
- Excellent knowledge of standard Microsoft Office tools (Excel, Power
Point, Word). - Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English and/or French; knowledge of another EU language would be an advantage.
