EIB Trainee - Projects Directorate - Bio-economy Division - based in Luxembourg
European Investment Bank (EIB) invites applications for this trainee position in the Projects Directorate (PJ) – Innovation & Competitiveness Department (INCO) - Bio-economy Division (BIOEC) at its headquarters in Luxembourg.
This 5‑month role (fixed start date 1 March/April 2026) is based in our Luxembourg headquarters and requires regular office presence. It offers a truly international and multi‑cultural environment.
Eligibility: Only nationals of EU Member States or countries officially granted candidate status to join the EU (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, Turkey, Ukraine) may apply.
Note: Candidates whose Erasmus+ programme overlaps with the traineeship duration will not be considered.

Objective of the traineeship
Within the Tech
EU initiative and the European Commission’s broader ambition to support viable industrial scale‑up efforts, you will contribute to a strategic study focused on CAPEX‑intensive cleantech companies and transformative internal projects led by large corporates in the bio‑economy sector. The study will emphasize biotech‑based manufacturing processes and the emerging trend of feedstock substitution, aiming to provide actionable insights that strengthen project appraisal and improve deal‑sourcing strategies.
Responsibilities
- Compile recommendations from existing studies on bio‑economy scale‑up.
- Identify lessons learned from past innovation successes and failures, focusing on barriers to scale‑up such as land‑use constraints, regulatory gaps, high energy costs, demand uncertainty, and supply chain dependencies.
- Critically assess the substitution potential of bio‑based feedstocks against low‑cost fossil‑based counterparts, evaluating technical feasibility, market readiness, and price competitiveness.
- Develop a financial performance benchmarking table summarising historical returns and payback periods for CAPEX‑heavy bio‑economy‑related cleantech.
Academic Qualifications And Professional Skills
- Final year of studies or Master in related fields such as Biology, Biochemistry, Agro‑industry, Industrial or Agricultural Engineering or Economy, Sustainable Finance.
- Familiarity with cleantech, innovation, and bio‑based industrial processes.
- Strong analytical and research skills.
- Knowledge of EU climate and bio‑economy policies, private markets, or venture financing instruments is advantageous.
- Excellent knowledge of standard Microsoft Office tools.
- Excellent written and spoken English; working‑level knowledge of French and/or any other EU language is a distinct advantage.
