Fabricator
The Fabricator should be able to use custom fabrication and grinding/polishing techniques at a "Journeyman" level for creating, designing, and fabricating custom pieces according to client specifications. They need to understand the client's needs, use specialized equipment to create custom pieces and ensure the final products meet quality standards. They perform tasks such as cutting, forming, layout, fit‑up, welding, and finishing while consulting design blueprints to fabricate and install custom parts for vessel construction. Additionally, they inspect and test the customized vessels to ensure safety, quality, and functionality.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Own and help improve performance in Safety, Quality, and Delivery.
- Perform MIG and/or TIG welding on Carbon Steel, Aluminum, and Stainless Steel at a level that meets quality standards. Must hold weld certifications: T11‑01, T11‑02, T14‑01, MIG 21‑04, and M21‑05.
- Read engineering prints, weld symbols, and follow specifications.
- Conduct basic preventive maintenance for welding equipment.
- Maneuver in tight and small spaces and work at heights of 15–20 ft.
- Perform general grinding, polishing, and finishing jobs.
- Provide additional work as assigned by the supervisor or team leader, including assisting across departments.
- Wear approved personal protective equipment such as safety shoes, gloves, safety glasses with side shields, respirators, and hearing protection.
- Complete assigned duties in accordance with safety policies and practices, protecting oneself and co‑workers and ensuring safe equipment use.
- Mentor welders and grinders when needed.
Tools & Equipment
- Oxy/Acetylene Torch
- Interpret engineering prints and follow standard work instructions
- Handheld tools, hoist, and crane usage
- MIG and TIG (GTAW, GMAW, including pulse transfer)
- Plasma cutter and gouging devices
- Grinders and sanders
- Respirators or ADF/PAPR hoods
- Safety equipment for tasks (safety glasses, earplugs, face shields, harnesses)
- Grinding tools such as disk grinders, expandable wheels, Dyna‑files, die grinders, cut‑off wheels
- Cleaning chemicals (e. g. , Windex, Prep‑sol, acetone)
- Hand polishing tools (scotch pads, scotch belts)
Qualifications
- Reading, writing, math, and verbal skills.
- Capability to follow and understand engineering prints, specifications, and instructions.
- Ability to build custom fabrication of stainless‑steel vessels according to print.
- High‑level welding capabilities and certifications (listed above).
- Understanding of high‑level fabrication processes and techniques.
- Proficiency in using layout tools (tape measure, compass, key points, levels, laser alignment jigs).
- Ability to work alone or as part of a group.
- Fabrication tasks performed to a Welder 4 skill level and grinding/polishing tasks performed to a Grinder 2 skill level.
Physical Demands
Regularly required to stand, walk, climb, sit, bend, kneel, stoop, and handle and operate controls for the length of the shift. Requires a full range of motion in arms and hands, clear vision acuity, ability to adjust focus, and good hand‑eye coordination. Employees may work in small spaces and lift or carry objects up to 50 lb.
