Offer Description
The Faculty of Economy of the University of Porto hereby opens this call for 1 (one) Research Grant (BI), for a student enrolled in a doctoral program to carry out R&D activities under the project “F2For
ALL” - Development of a sustainable strategy “from Farm to Fork” in the Mediterranean, funded through the Northern Regional Operational Program (NORTE2030), under Portugal 2030, of the R&D unit Centro de Economia e Finanças do Porto, under the following conditions:
1. Research areas: Social Sciences: Economics, Management, Statistics, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics and others
2. Admission requirements:
To apply for the research studentship, applicants must comply with the following requirements, for which documentary evidence must be provided:
- Master degree in Economics, Statistics, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics or related areas or related scientific areas [1] ;
- To be a student enrolled in a doctoral programme in the area of (definir) - this requirement must be proven at the time of contracting2.
3. Preferred requirements:
Published work(s) and/or defended a master's thesis in the scientific area of research in which the competition is open.
4. Work Plan:
4. 1. The purpose of this contract is to perform the following tasks:
The research grant holder will be engaged in R&D and dissemination activities that align with the research areas of the F2For
ALL project, aiming to fulfill two main objectives:
- The first objective involves the computational implementation of multiple linear regression models in spatial econometrics and/or survival analysis, incorporating multilevel fixed effects or other innovative econometric models proposed by the candidate.
The second objective focuses on the development of empirical applications utilizing the methodologies developed in the first objective. Examples of potential empirical applications include identifying determinants of sustainable
- food demand and/or supply, inferring key factors promoting the penetration of the Mediterranean diet in other European countries, assessing marketing strategies and
- tourism in the
- food industry, estimating the return on investment associated with the implementation of sustainable and/or digital technologies in the
- food sector, analyzing the impact of sustainable agriculture development on various environmental pollutants, or evaluating the effect of different elements within the
- food value chain on retail prices and international trade.
The research fellow will actively participate in the following project activities:
a) Collection, processing, organization, and exploratory analysis of data;
b) Development of code in R, Python, Mata/Stata, or Matlab;
c) Empirical application and econometric modeling;
d) Preparation of a doctoral dissertation.
4. 2. When the academic degree or diploma is awarded during the term of the studentship contracts, the studentship may continue as long as the activities provided for in the work plan have not been completed and under the terms specifically provided for in the call for applications and in the contract, in accordance with Article 10(6) of the University of Porto's Research Studentship Regulation.
5. Applicable Legislation and Regulations:
The call for applications and the respective award of the studentship are governed by the provisions of the University of Porto's Research Studentship Regulation - approved by Regulation no. 184/2021, published in Diário da República, 2. ª Série, n. 43, 03rd March, hereinafter referred to as the Regulations no. 43, of 03rd March; the legal framework for the recognition of academic degrees and higher education diplomas awarded by foreign higher education institutions; the Code of Administrative Procedure (CPA), approved by Decree-Law no. 4/2015, of 7th January; the Research Fellow Statute (EBI), approved by Law no. 40/2004, of 18th August, in the current wording published by Decree-Law no. 123/2019, of 28th August and; other applicable rules.
6. Workplace:
The work plan will be developed at the CEF. UP Research Unit of the Faculty of Economics of the University of Porto and/or other locations necessary for implementation, under the scientific supervision of Professor Vitor Miguel de Sousa Ribeiro.
7. Duration:
The BI will have a duration of 12 months, on an exclusive dedication basis,
- renewable or possibly renewable, after a positive evaluation, up to the limit of the period of execution of the work plan or funding, and may not, under any circumstances, have a duration of more than four years, when the scholarship has been awarded to a student enrolled in a doctoral program, under the terms of article 10(3) of the Regulation.
8. Monthly maintenance allowance amount:
8. 1. The monthly maintenance allowance for the studentship is 1. 309, 64 €, according to Annex I of the Regulation, updated by Rectoral Order No. GR 11/02/2025, of February 19, which changes the value of the University of Porto's research grants for the current year.
8. 2. Payment will be made by Faculty of Economy of the University of Porto by bank transfer. In addition to this allowance, the studentship holder will be covered by personal accident insurance.
8. 3. The studentship holder can join the Voluntary Social Insurance Scheme (valid for a studentship contract of six months or more), which is optional (not compulsory) and the reimbursement corresponds to the 1st step of the contribution base.
9. Evaluation methods:
9. 1. The selection methods are as follows: curricular assessment (AC – abbreviation in Portuguese) with a weighting of 90% and, optionally, complemented by an interview (ENT – abbreviation in Portuguese) with a weighting of 100%, which will only take place when the Jury considers that the AC does not allow it to clarify, in the intended manner, the real competences of the candidates or to distinguish which candidate is best suited to the position and functions to be performed. If this is the case, the interview will be carried out with the 3 (three) candidates best classified in the AC.
9. 2. Each member of the Jury will assess the selection methods on a scale of 0 to 100 points.
9. 3. The criteria and weighting factors for the curricular assessment (AC) are:
- Quality of the candidate’s scientific production, including the Master’s thesis in relevant fields – 60%.
- Quality of the submitted Research Plan – 15%.
- Motivation Letter, demonstrating curriculum relevance and advanced English proficiency – 10%.
- Overall Curriculum Quality – 10%.
9. 4. The following are the criteria and weighting factors for the interview (ENT), should it be held:
- Adequacy of the technical proposal to the objectives and needs of the host institution/unit;
- Candidate’s motivation for carrying out the proposed project;
- Ability to articulate and integrate the project with the rest of the research team;
- Command of the subject and technical competencies demonstrated during the interview.
9. 5. The candidates may ask the President of the Jury to authorize their interview to be conducted by videoconference, stating the reasons for this.
9. 6. Failure to attend the interview stage of the selection process is equivalent to withdrawing from the competition, and applicants will be excluded from the competition.
9. 7. The Final Classification (CF - abbreviation in Portuguese) will be obtained by applying the following formula: CF = (0. 90*AC) + (0. 10*ENT).
9. 8. This competition is intended exclusively to fill the vacancy indicated. In the event that no candidate demonstrates that they have the profile required to fulfil the work plan described above within the scope of this project, the Jury reserves the right not to award the position.

11. Submission of applications:

11. 3. The application must be accompanied by documents proving the conditions set out in this Notice, namely:
- Copy of the certificate(s) of the required qualifications and recognition of the degree if it was obtained at a foreign higher education institution (this recognition can be submitted up to the time of hiring);
- Proof of enrollment in a course of study or a sworn statement attesting that you meet the conditions for enrollment and that you will submit proof of enrollment by the time you are hired;
- Letters of reference/recommendation (written in English);
- Statement of eligibility (attached).
11. 4. The candidates may also attach any other documents they feel are relevant to assessing their merit.
11. 5. Failure to comply with the application submission deadline, failure to submit or late submission of the documents referred to in points a), b) and e) of paragraph 11. 3 will result in the application being excluded.
11. 6. The documents mentioned in point 11. 3 must preferably be submitted in a

11. 7. The Jury may, whenever it deems it necessary, ask applicants to submit additional documents relating to the facts mentioned in their CVs, setting a deadline for this, as follows:
a) the documentation referred to is not intended for the presentation of elements not mentioned in the curriculum vitae, nor for the addition of missing documents required by this Notice;
b) all tenderers are informed that additional documentation has been requested.
False statements made by candidates will be penalized in accordance with the law.
13. Notification of results:
13. 1. All notifications within this procedure shall be sent by email through the APPLY platform.
13. 2. Notifications are made by email, under the terms of articles 112(1)(c) and 113(5) of the CPA.
13. 3. Under the terms of article 121 et seq. of the CPA, once notified, candidates have 10 working days to comment in writing.
14. Booking list:
A reserve list shall be prepared based on the final ranking list and may be used in the event of the withdrawal of the candidate ranked first. The highest authority of the Faculty reserves the right to call the next candidate in order, and so on, until the vacancy is filled. The reserve list may be used for a maximum period of twelve (12) months from the date of approval of the final ranking list.
