1 Research Grant Announcement (M/F)

Call open for applications for a research grant within the framework of Agenda “Circular
Tech”, nr. C644968678-00000054, investment project nr. 52, of the Incentive System “Agendas for Business Innovation”, financed by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) and by European Funds Next
Generation EU, under the following conditions:

Scientific Area: Industrial Engineering and Management

Admission requirements: Candidates who cumulatively meet the following requirements may apply for this grant:

Requirement 1:

• To be a student enrolled in a master degree or integrated master or in an integrated master's program who has already completed the 180 credits corresponding to the first six curricular semesters in Industrial Engineering and Management.

or

- Holder of an academic degree enrolled in a
- academic degree course integrated in the educational project of a higher education institution, developed in association or cooperation with one or more R&D units, requirement to be proven at the time of signing the contract.

Note: In the case of degree holders who are enrolled in
- academic degree courses, the scholarship can only be awarded to those who do not exceed, with this scholarship contract, including possible renewals, an accumulated period of two years in that typology of the scholarship, followed or interpolated.

And

Requirement 2:

Hold a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering and Management or related area.

If the degree has been awarded by a foreign higher education institution, it must comply with the provisions of the Decree-Law no. 66/2018, of august 16th, and any formalities established there must be fulfilled until the time of signing the contract.

Activity Outline:

The aim of this research, within the scope WP8 - “Waste Smart Management”, is the development of a decision support system for the design and operationalisation of new urban strategies and services that boost the circular economy, increasing efficiency and the adoption of reuse processes. This includes:

• Surveying the state of the art on methods for designing and managing circular waste management services
• Collecting, mapping and modelling the system's main requirements and objectives
• Development of a prescriptive model to support operational decisions in this context and support the diffusion of the service
• Development of advanced solution methods to obtain good results in times that allow them to be used in a decision support system
• Analysing the efficiency and quality of the proposed methodology using real data
• Proposing managerial insights by performing sensitivity analysis on the solutions obtained
• Writing a scientific paper.

Legislation and regulations: Law Nº. 40/2004, of 18th August, in its current wording (Statutes of Scientific Research Fellow) and Regulation of Research Grants of Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, in force ( https://www.fct. pt/financiamento/programas-de-financiamento/bolsas/ ) and Regulation of Research Grants of University of Porto, in force.

Work place: The work will be developed at the Department of Industrial Engineering and Management of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), under the scientific supervision of Professor Maria Beatriz Brito Oliveira.

Grant duration: Initial duration of 3 months, with the predicted starting date in September 2025, on an exclusive basis eventually renewable but never exceeding the end of the project.

If it is not possible to ensure the duration of 3 months estimated in the previous paragraph, this duration will be adjusted according to the end date of the project, and provided that the minimum duration of 3 consecutive months is guaranteed, in accordance with paragraph 3 of article 6 of the Research Grant Regulations of the Foundation for Science and Technology, I. P.

The eventual renewal of the scholarship will be carried out as determined in article 6 of the Research Grants Regulation of the Foundation for Science and Technology, I. P.

Note:The present notice is published pending the authorisation of the funding authority to extend project´s end date, therefore, for this reason and for reasons of interest of the institution, by means of a duly reasoned act, this selection process may be terminated until before notification of the selection minutes to the applicants, within the scope of the hearing of interested parties.

Selection procedure:

The curricular evaluation of the candidates will be evaluated based on the merit of the candidate and the following factors will be assessed:

a) Academic training in the area of Industrial Engineering and Management ‐ 5 points; related areas –

2 points.

b) Experience in optimisation (experience with decision models ‐ maximum 2 points, experience with decision models and metaheuristic solution methods ‐ maximum of 5 points).

c) Knowledge of Python languages (maximum of 5 points)

d). Mastery of the English language, to be assessed through a motivation letter (maximum of 5

points)

The two best ranked candidates in the curricular evaluation that obtain 10 or more points, will be interviewed (up to 5 points). In the interview topics related with the work plan, experience, motivation and candidate’s CV will be discussed). If the minimum score of 17 points is not achieved by any of the candidates, the respective scholarship may not be awarded.

The final scores results from the sum of the curricular evaluation and the interview.
