1 Postdoctoral Research Fellowship

A call is open for the award of a postdoctoral research fellowship “Study and Development of New Machine Learning Algorithms”, funded by FEUP – Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, under the following conditions:

Scientific Area:Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning

Admission Requirements:

This postdoctoral research fellowship can only be awarded if all the following conditions are cumulatively met:

a) The Ph
D degree in Computer Science or a related field must have been obtained within the three years prior to the date of submission of the fellowship application;

b) The postdoctoral research must be carried out in a host institution different from the one where the research work leading to the Ph
D degree was developed;

c) The total duration of the fellowship contract, including any possible renewals, must not exceed a cumulative period of three years under this type of fellowship, whether consecutive or not.

If the academic degree was awarded by a foreign higher education institution, it must comply with the provisions of Decree-Law No. 66/2018 of August 16, and all formalities established therein must be fulfilled by the time the contract is signed.

Work Plan:

• Study and development of new machine learning algorithms, including reinforcement learning algorithms and algorithms for optimizing the performance of large language models.
• Other research support tasks (e. g. , student supervision, proposal preparation, report writing, preparation of scientific and educational materials, software development).

Applicable Legislation and Regulations:Scientific Research Fellowship Statute – Law No. 40/2004 of August 18, in its current wording, and the Research Fellowship Regulations of the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), currently in force ( https://www.fct. pt/financiamento/programas-de-financiamento/bolsas/ ) and the Research Fellowship Regulations of the University of Porto, currently in force.

Place of Work:The work will be carried out at the Department of Informatics Engineering of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), under the scientific supervision of Professor Luis Paulo Gonçalves dos Reis.

Fellowship Duration and Activity Regime:The fellowship will have a duration of 12 months, starting in September 2025, under an exclusive dedication regime, and may be renewed up to a maximum of 3 years, without exceeding the maximum duration of the project. If it is not possible to ensure the 12-month duration mentioned in the previous paragraph, the duration will be adjusted according to the project’s end date, provided that a minimum period of 3 consecutive months is guaranteed, as established in paragraph 6 of Article 7 of the Research Fellowship Regulations of the Foundation for Science and Technology, I. P.

Monthly Maintenance Allowance:The monthly fellowship amount ranges between €1, 851. 00, according to the Research Fellowship Regulations of the University of Porto, and €2, 286. 00, depending on the candidate’s profile and previous experience in the project’s area. Payment will be made by bank transfer.

Selection Methods:The selection of the fellow will be based on a curricular evaluation focusing on the candidate’s merit, according to the following assessment criteria:

• Academic background of the candidate: Ph
  D in Computer Engineering / Computer Science (5 points); Ph
  D in related fields (2 points);
• Participation in R&D projects in a field relevant to the research project (5 points); participation in R&D projects in related fields (2 points);
• Relevant scientific outputs for the research project, including publications and supervision (1–5 points);
• Motivation letter, which will be used to assess both the candidate’s motivation and English proficiency (1–5 points).

Each candidate's CV will be evaluated on a scale from 1 to 20 points. If none of the candidates achieves a minimum final score of 15 points, the fellowship will not be awarded.
