We are hiring a Lead Data Governance Engineer responsible for data governance policies, processes, standards, and monitoring to ensure compliance with internal policies and applicable regulatory frameworks such as GDPR, DPA, ISO, etc. The successful candidate will develop Python-based tooling to automate internal data mesh operations, including data labeling and quality metrics, adhering to data, access management, and data security best practices.
The Data Governance team within the Commercial Systems unit aims to enable secure and
- governed access to comprehensive datasets from various internal and external sources within a data mesh. The team works with
- source data governance tools like Trino and Ranger, defines and executes data governance processes, and promotes data democratization at Canonical.
Location: This role is remote within the EMEA region.
Key Responsibilities:
- Define, monitor, and enforce data governance policies.
- Design, implement, and maintain tooling for automated data mesh operations.
- Deploy and operate the services developed by the team.
- Depending on seniority, coach, mentor, and provide career development feedback.
- Develop and promote best practices in engineering and organizational processes.
Qualifications:
- Exceptional academic record from high school through university.
- Undergraduate degree in a technical field or a compelling alternative narrative.
- Proven track record of exceeding expectations to achieve outstanding results.
- Experience with data quality, governance, and security processes and tools.
- Proficiency in Python and SQL software development.
- Excellent written and spoken English, with strong presentation skills.
- Result-oriented with personal drive to meet commitments.
- Willingness to travel internationally twice a year for up to two weeks.
Nice-to-Have Skills:
- Performance engineering and security expertise.
- Experience with tools such as Airbyte, Ranger, Superset, Temporal, or Trino.
