The Canonical Kernel Team seeks highly skilled industry veterans with a proven track record in operating systems kernel development or
- level system engineering to lead architecture, implementation, and delivery of Ubuntu Linux kernel aspects, including:
- Driving engagement with Silicon and Cloud partners for optimal platform solutions
- Leading mitigation of vulnerabilities and active kernel hardening
- Architecting performance and correctness enhancements for Ubuntu Linux
- Streamlining packaging and distribution of
- party components - Developing scalable delivery methods meeting quality standards and schedules
While not a formal managerial role, the candidate should possess strong leadership skills and the ability to guide engineers and collaborate with external teams. We seek individuals with deep technical expertise in operating system kernels and distributions, combined with leadership and initiative skills. Although experience length varies, we seek candidates with the demonstrated technical equivalent of 15+ years of industry experience.
Location: Remote roles available in every timezone, with some aspects linked to specific regions.
Role responsibilities include:
- Setting technical direction and leading a team of engineers on Ubuntu Linux kernel aspects
- Collaborating with management to track and coordinate initiatives
- Working with senior technical leadership to ensure Ubuntu remains at the top of Linux distributions
Candidate requirements:
- Well-organized, motivated
- starter thriving in remote environments - Strong English communication skills
- Expertise in C programming
- Experience with *nix-based kernels and distributions (Linux preferred but not required)
- Proficiency in Python and Bash scripting
- Deep understanding of git version control
- Experience with software packaging formats, especially Ubuntu/Debian/Snap
- Ability to travel internationally at least twice a year for up to two weeks
Nice-to-have skills:
- Background in RTOS and
- time performance analysis - Experience with kernel patching and debugging
- Knowledge of device drivers, BSPs,
- level system engineering - Experience with Rust related to the Linux kernel
