Legal Assistant – European & Portuguese Law
Location: Funchal – Madeira
Role Overview:
As a Legal Assistant with a strong foundation in both Portuguese and European Union law, you will support the legal department in managing documentation, drafting legal materials, and ensuring compliance with national and EU regulatory frameworks. You will play a key role in helping the business navigate contracts, risk, and governance procedures across multiple jurisdictions.
Key Responsibilities:
• Draft, review, and organize legal documents, contracts, and internal policies;
• Conduct legal research on Portuguese, EU, and international legislation, directives, and case law;
• Support compliance with labor laws, data protection (GDPR), and corporate governance rules;
• Assist in maintaining contract lifecycle processes and document repositories;
• Monitor legislative updates across relevant jurisdictions and brief internal teams;
• Coordinate with external legal counsel and notarial services when required;
• Prepare documentation for regulatory filings, board meetings, and
- border business activities;
• Translate or proofread legal texts in Portuguese and English.
Requirements:
• Degree in Law, Legal Studies, or related field;
• At least 2 years of experience in a legal support role, ideally in a
- border or corporate environment;
• Familiarity with Portuguese Civil Code and core EU legal frameworks (e. g. , GDPR, company law, labor law);
• Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail;
• Strong verbal and written communication skills in both Portuguese and English;
• Proficiency with legal document management and office software tools.
Preferred Attributes:
• Experience in supporting multinational or
- European operations;
• Working knowledge of intellectual property, entertainment/media law, or international contracts is a plus;
• Comfort handling confidential information with discretion and professionalism;
• Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet tight deadlines independently;
• Experience or demonstrable interest in legal compliance matters related to the Zona Franca da Madeira (Madeira International Business Centre)
• Familiarity with EU institutional processes or regulatory bodies;
