The ABC Co
LAB (Algarve Biomedical Center Collaborative Laboratory - Integrated Solutions for Aging and Rejuvenation) is an innovative
- helix model in health focused on longevity and active aging, aimed at transferring knowledge and technology to society and target markets.
This call is for hiring one (1) Ph
D Researcher in Data Science (or related areas) (M/F), for candidates of any nationality, under operation ALGARVE-FSE+-01177600 related to the application submitted to Notice ALGARVE-2024-8, funded by the Algarve 2030 Regional Program and
- funded by the European Social Fund Plus (ESF+).

Mission: To strengthen ABC Co
LAB's capabilities in addressing the complex challenges associated with healthy ageing and longevity by leveraging data science, artificial intelligence and multidisciplinary approaches, under the coordination of the Chief Executive and Innovation Officer (CEO/CIO). The successful candidate will contribute to developing innovative solutions, based on
- driven strategies, to advance biomedical and health sciences while incorporating environmental and social factors that affect ageing populations.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Integrate data from multiple sources (e. g. , biomedical, clinical, social, environmental) to create comprehensive models of healthy ageing;
- Develop and implement
- driven models to analyse and predict ageing biomarkers and health trends; - Create machine learning models and AI-driven solutions to predict health outcomes, manage chronic diseases, and/or understand the impacts of environmental changes on public health;
- Design and conduct advanced statistical analyses to identify patterns and trends related to ageing;
- Create data visualization tools to communicate research findings to stakeholders;
- Collaborate with biologists, biomedical and social scientists, clinicians and technologists to translate research into practical applications;
- Contribute to innovate and validate new models for health and wellness tourism that align with sustainable practices, by leveraging data analysis, predictive modelling, and machine learning techniques;
- Develop decision support systems and tools that could assist in policy making and strategic planning in public health, particularly under changing environmental conditions;
- Identify funding opportunities and prepare grant proposals to support research and innovation initiatives aligned with ABC Co
LAB's strategic goals; - Produce or collaborate in the production of scientific or technological papers, communications, and/or reports;
- Contribute to the strategic development of data science methodologies within ABC Co
LAB; - Propose, support and supervise the development and operationalization of novel products and services; - Support the CEO/CIO in the implementation of emerging tools and technologies to maximize efficacy, productivity, results and resources of ABC Co
LAB; - Actively participate in ABC Co
LAB's innovation and research policy; - Participate in ABC Co
LAB's knowledge dissemination, communication, and outreach activities.
REQUIRED PROFILE:
- At least 5 years of Ph
D degree (MANDATORY) in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Bioinformatics, or related fields; - Minimum of 3 years of experience in data science;
- Solid experience in applying statistical modelling and machine learning to complex datasets;
- Proficiency in programming languages (e. g. Python, R, or MATLAB) and data visualization (e. g. , Tableau, Power BI, Matplotlib);
- Experience with cloud computing and big data tools (e. g. , Hadoop, AWS, Google Cloud, Azure) is a plus;
- Knowledge of AI ethics,
- preserving AI (e. g. , federated learning); - Familiarity with spatial/temporal data (e. g. , geospatial, environmental sensors);
- Ability to communicate complex ideas and results to both scientific/technical and non scientific/non-technical audiences;
- Experience working with
- related data (medical imaging, clinical, wearable, or omics data); - Professional experience in interdisciplinary,
- driven R&D (health, ageing, sustainability, etc. ) and business settings relevant to ABC Co
LAB.

- Prior participation in innovation or translational research (e. g. , startups, Co

- driven science and improving lives through technology; - Relevant scientific production through publications, conference communications and/or participation in projects, in data science, modelling, machine learning or related areas;
- Participation in European Projects is a plus;

- Experience in developing and leading projects from conception through execution; - Proven track record in applying AI and machine learning;

Selection process
SELECTION PANEL
The selection panel consists of:
- President: Clévio Nóbrega, President of the Board – ABC Co
LAB; - 1st Alternate Member: Sérgio Pina, Co-Founder of Aurora
MED; - 2nd Alternate Member: Filomena Pereira, Board Member of ABC Co
LAB.
SELECTION METHODS AND CRITERIA
Eligible applications will be scored from zero (minimum score) to twenty (maximum score). In case of a tie or if considered necessary, an interview will be conducted with the top 3 candidates.
Admission:All candidates who meet the defined requirements will be admitted.
Evaluation Method:
- Final classification will be the weighted average of the curricular assessment (50%) and the interview (50%).
- Selection of the candidates with the highest final score.
Curricular Assessment (CA)
The CA will be quantitatively expressed from 0 to 20 points, calculated from the following objective criteria: CA = 0. 3 × A + 0. 4 × B + 0. 3 × C
where:
A - Evaluates the academic merit based on professional qualifications;
B - Evaluates previous experience relevant to the position;
C - Evaluates the quality of the research and career plan.
Interview (I)
If necessary or in the case of a tie, the interview will be conducted with the top 3 candidates, either in person or by videoconference.
The interview score will be based on the following criteria:
a) Scientific Expertise
b) Technical and Soft Skills
c) Problem-Solving and Innovation
d) Team Collaboration and Communication
e) Grant Writing and Funding Experience
f) Leadership and Independence
These criteria will be scored from zero to twenty, and the total interview score will be the sum of the criteria divided by six (0-20 points).
Final Classification (FC)
The final classification of each candidate will be decided by a simple majority of the selection panel members. Candidates will be ranked according to their FC. In case of a tie, the President of the panel will decide.
If an interview is required, the final classification (FC) of each candidate will be obtained through the weighted average of the Curricular Assessment (CA) (50%) and the Interview (I) (50%). After applying each selection criterion, each jury member will rank the candidates according to the final classification. The candidate who receives the majority of votes will be selected. In case of a tie, the decision will be made by the President of the panel.
The jury will hold the necessary meetings to reach a final decision, documenting the procedures used as well as all elements deemed relevant to the final decision.
If no candidates of merit are found, or if funding conditions change significantly after the publication of this notice, the jury reserves the right to close the competition without recruitment. If the selected candidate declines the position, the selection panel reserves the right to offer the position to the next candidate in the ranking.

COMMUNICATION OF RESULTS
The evaluation results will be published athttps://ageingbettercolab. org/ and sent to the candidates' email addresses within 90 working days after the application deadline. Candidates have 10 working days after the results are released to respond during the
- decision hearing process. The final decision will be made within 60 working days after the
- decision hearing.
If all candidates are selected for the position, the process will conclude with a final decision.
RATIFICATION
After the
- decision hearing, the final panel decision will be proposed for ratification by the ABC Co
LAB Board.
OTHER INFORMATION
Candidates with foreign academic degrees must provide proof of degree recognition as per Decree-Law no. 66/2018. Any candidate without such recognition will not be admitted to the competition.
