An Overview:
The British Embassy in Lisbon is part of a worldwide network representing British political, economic, security and consular interests overseas. We are now seeking a
- quality Policy and Communications Assistant who will work at the heart of the British Embassy in Lisbon, in its Political and Economic Section.
As the Policy and Communications Assistant, you will have the opportunity to work across the full spectrum of the UK’s policy priorities in Portugal. Your focus will be providing support to the Policy Officer and the Communications Officer. You will also provide some
- touch administrative support to the wider political and economic section. Demonstrating flexibility and adaptability will be important.
You will need to be able to work both autonomously and as part of a wider team, including with other sections of the Embassy. You will form part of a team of 12 colleagues working on issues including internal politics, economics, communications, energy, education, health and values. You will be encouraged to contribute to the corporate life of the Embassy, for example by joining one of the main staff committees (e. g. learning and development, wellbeing and inclusion).
The role entails:
- Providing support to the Policy Officer, for example through research and analysis on specific projects.
- Drafting and posting digital media content in support of the UK Government’s priorities in Portugal.
- Supporting the Communications Officer to design and deliver internal communications (for example posters).
- Arranging external and internal meetings for team members.
- Working closely with the Ambassador’s office to coordinate key information across the section and the wider Embassy, including stakeholder contacts and invitations to the Embassy’s
- scale events. - Providing ad hoc administrative support to the wider team including stationery orders, and travel/transport bookings.
- Contributing to a positive working culture in the UK’s Portugal Network, including through membership of a corporate committee.
Our ideal candidate will have:
- Proficiency in written and spoken English and Portuguese (C1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).
- Experience managing multiple competing tasks by demonstrating strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Self-management skills with proven ability to manage, plan, and prioritise tasks and workload.
- Good judgement, and experience of working proactively, independently and
- planning. - Excellent communications skills, being able to analyse and present written, verbal and quantitative information clearly and concisely.
- A strong record of teamwork, with the ability to work collaboratively across the Embassy.
- A desire to learn.
- Strong IT skills, particularly with Microsoft Office and Microsoft Teams.
Good to have:
- Experience of working in communications and/or on climate and energy policy.

This is a
- time, permanent contract.
The British Embassy in Lisbon aims to offer an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role of € 17, 331. 55 gross annual salary paid in fourteen instalments; plus a monthly meal allowance of €193. 60. This salary is payable if the successful candidate is subject to individual income tax (IRS) in Portugal on the employment income in question. If the successful candidate is not subject to individual income tax (IRS) on their employment income in Portugal, and/or is not taxable elsewhere on such income, s/he will receive the above salary minus a reference amount approximate to the level of Portuguese tax that would be applicable if the income were subject to tax locally. Further information on this will be given to candidates during the recruitment process.
All staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Portugal are subject to local Portuguese employment law as well as internal regulations in force at any given time.
The successful candidate will be subject to a professional background and security clearance and must have
- existing work authorisation for Portugal in order to apply.
All applicants should have the right to live and work in Portugal. The British Embassy does not sponsor work permits.
The Embassy will not consider applications from existing staff who have not successfully completed their probation period or, in the case of staff on temporary contract who have not yet completed two thirds of their contract.

Working Pattern: This is a
- time position based at the British Embassy in Lisbon. The British Embassy’s flexible working policy currently allows for staff to work remotely for up to two days a week.

There are opportunities to undertake formal training courses, work shadowing and other, more informal activities to support induction and professional development.
