About INL
The International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL) is the world’s first intergovernmental research organization entirely dedicated to nanoscience and nanotechnology. Established by the governments of Portugal and Spain, INL conducts interdisciplinary research aimed at addressing major global challenges through
- enabled innovation in materials, electronics, health, and energy.
About the Role
This position is part of the Sotomayor Research Group, renowned for its pioneering work in nanophononics—the study of heat and sound at the nanoscale. The successful candidate will join the SPARK-e project, an EU-funded EIC Pathfinder initiative exploring
- efficient phononic devices and nanoscale heat management.
The researcher will advance ultrafast laser thermoreflectance (TDTR) techniques to probe phonon transport and thermal mapping in nanostructured and emerging materials. This work directly contributes to the development of
- generation thermal management systems for nanoelectronics and quantum devices.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct experimental research on nanoscale thermal transport using ultrafast laser setups (TDTR).
- Design, build, and optimize optical systems for
- and
- domain thermoreflectance. - Perform thermal imaging and phonon transport studies in nanomaterials and phononic crystals.
- Develop and validate finite element models (FEM) for nanoscale heat flow simulations (e. g. , COMSOL).
- Analyze data using MATLAB or Python and disseminate findings through
- reviewed publications and conferences. - Collaborate with international project partners and contribute to equipment maintenance and lab safety.
Required Qualifications
- Ph
D in Condensed Matter Physics, Materials Science, Applied Physics, or related field. - Demonstrated experience in semiconductor physics, nanoscale devices, or thermal transport.
- Hands-on experience with ultrafast laser systems for
- resolved measurements. - Proficiency in finite element modeling and data processing.
Valued Skills
- Knowledge of interfacial thermal transport and phononic materials.
- Programming and data analysis in MATLAB, Python, or equivalent.
- Strong analytical and
- solving abilities. - Effective communication and teamwork in an international research environment.
Employment Benefits
- Private health insurance and family allowances.
- Relocation and education fee support.
- Free nursery service (subject to availability).
- Diplomatic privileges and tax benefits.
- 30 working days of paid annual leave.
- Access to advanced research infrastructure and international collaborations.
Application Process
Applications must be submitted online via INL’s careers portal by November 26, 2025 (23:00 Lisbon Time).
Include the following mandatory documents (in English, PDF format):
- Cover letter
- Curriculum Vitae
- Academic and/or professional diplomas
- At least one reference letter
Incomplete applications will not be considered.
Equal Opportunity Statement
