A Research Fellowship (BI) (Reference REQUIMTE 2025-80) on the project"ASt
UTe - Avoiding the environmental Spread of contaminants of emerging concern by Using hybrid approaches to Treat urban wastewater", funded by FEDER funds (COMPETE 2030) and national funds by FCT/MECI, operation no. 16625, with reference

Admission requirements: Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering or related fields with a course average of 15 or higher and enrolled in a Doctoral Program in Analytical Chemistry and Engineering for Environmental Sustainability, or enrolled/attendance of a
- degree course taught by a higher education institution in conjunction with an R&D unit in Chemical Engineering or related areas. Knowledge in chemical and biological engineering, quality control, wastewater treatment, and specifically in adsorption. Experience in the production and application of biochar, namely as a pharmaceutical adsorbent, and in the quantification of pharmaceuticals by HPLC.

In case the master’s degree was awarded by a foreign higher education institution, it must comply with the provisions of Decree-Law no. 66/2018 of 16th August , and all formalities established therein must be complied with at the signature of Fellowship contract.

Working plan:The work plan includes (1) the production of biochar from wastewater treatment plant sludge in potential combination with plant biomass, using different pyrolysis conditions, and respective characterization; (2) the selection of the biochar with the best performance as an adsorbent; (3) the carrying out of adsorption studies for the removal of pharmaceuticals; and (4) the carrying out of biochar regeneration tests and its characterization.

Duration: The fellowship will have duration of 6 months, possibly renewable for equal period up to a maximum of 12 months, starting on January 2026.

Monthly stipend:

Monthly stipend is €1. 309, 64 according to the stipends established by FCT, I. P. in Portugal(https://www.fct. pt/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Tabela_valores_SMM_2025. p… ). Payment will be made by bank transfer on a monthly basis. The successful candidate will also be entitled to the reimbursement of Social Security payments (Seguro Social Voluntário) and work insurance.

Selection criteria: The selection methods will be based on the candidate’s Curriculum Vitae. The following parameters will be assessed: curriculum evaluation (40%), knowledge in chemical and biological engineering area (10%), quality control (10%), wastewater treatment (10%), and specifically in adsorption (5%). Experience in production (5%) and application of biochar, namely as a pharmaceutical adsorbent (10%), and in the quantification of pharmaceuticals by HPLC (10%).

Interview

If candidates' scores differ by 10% or less from the
- ranking candidate's, the panel will interview the
- ranking candidate and the candidates in this position. In this case, the interview will be weighted 30%.

The jury will not award the current scholarship to candidates with a final classification lower than 50%.

Jury composition

Publicity and communication of results: The ranking of applications will be published at a visible and public area of REQUIMTE facilities, and all candidates will be informed by email about the result of their application.
