Applications are open for two Research Fellowships within the framework of project “Twin-Stream” of the Instituto Superior Técnico (2025. 00314. DT4ST), funded by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), under code C19-i08-‘Smart Territories-AMA’ (component C19 - Public Administration - Digitisation, Interoperability and Cybersecurity)

Workplan: The fellowship holders are expected to work on modelling flows in porous media and/or with free surfaces. They will join the MOHID model development group and their activities will involve implementing the model and developing
- dimensional algorithms for heat transfer in soil, including advection and heat exchange between soil and water, and algorithms for oxygen and carbon dioxide transport, including organic matter dynamics (production and consumption). The model will solve equations for the dissolved phase and the solid phase and the interaction between them, similar to the dynamics of salts in the soil.

The work carried out is relevant for the completion of a master’s degree.

Duration: The fellowships will last for 12 months, starting in November 2025. Fellowship contracts may be renewed for a maximum total duration of 24 months, including the duration of the initial contract.

Admission Requirements: Candidates must be enrolled in master's degree courses involving Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics.

Additional Information

Monthly maintenance allowance: the amount of the monthly maintenance allowance is 1, 040. 98 €. The payment method (by wire transfer or cheque) is an option of the fellow. The fellow will be reimbursed for his/her payment of Voluntary Social Insurance (up to the amount corresponding to the 1st level).

Eligibility Criteria

Candidates must be enrolled in master's degree courses involving Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics.

Selection Process

Selection methods: The selection methods will be the following:

• Grades in Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics courses: 20% (0/20)
• Preference for students enrolled in courses that address numerical flow solutions: 20% (0/20)
• Preference for students enrolled in Master’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering (Energy Branch) or Aerospace Engineering: 20% (0/20)
• Individual interview (in the event of a tie between the
  - ranked candidates), where motivation and specific knowledge will be assessed: 30% (0/20)

Composition of the selection Jury: Chair: Associate Professor Tiago Domingos; Members: Full Professor Ramiro Neves and Assistant Professor Ricardo Teixeira; Substitute: Assistant Researcher Lígia Pinto.

Announcement/ notification of the results: The final evaluation results will be communicated to all applicants by email.

Deadlines and procedures of complaint and appeal. A complaint may be lodged from the final decision within 15 working days, or an appeal to the Executive Board of IST within 30 working days, both counted from the respective notification.

Workplace: The work will be developed at MARETEC – ACAE/DEM at Instituto Superior Técnico, under the scientific guidance of Full Professor Ramiro Neves and Dr. Ana Oliveira.
