Applications are open for 2 (two) Research Studentship(s), within the framework of project Models4Invasion/CEMAT, (2022. 03060. PTDC), financed by national funds through FCT/MCTES (PIDDAC

Workplan: Thecandidate(s) will have experience in mathematical modeling and programming. He/she will explore aspects of the
- species dynamics encoded in the replicator equation. The focus will be on understanding the principles and number of coexisting species, and the quality of their dynamics. The candidate(s) will also apply data fitting algorithms/machine learning algorithms to link multispecies dynamics to biological data from invasion scenarios. The project integrates elements from dynamical systems theory, ordinary differential equations, linear algebra, optimization, calculus and probability and statistics.

Duration: The research fellowship(s) will have the duration of 3 months. It’s expected to begin in (November/2025), and may be eventually renewed up to the maximum of 3 months.

It is mandatory to formalize applications with the submission of the following documents:

• transcript of grades and relevant courses/trainings;
• any example of written scientific work by the candidate (optional)

Admission Requirements: To be enrolled at an integrated master or a master.

Specific requirements

• The candidate must be enrolled in a
  Master's degree in Statistics, Biostatistics, Data Science, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field
• The candidate must have excellent verbal and written English communication skills
• He/she must have proven experience in statistical analysis, applied mathematics and probability, and data science, preferably applied to biological models (courses, reports, articles, projects)
• He she must have strong proficiency in Python and/or R for data analysis and other software for statistical and mathematical modeling
• He/she must have strong communication and collaboration skills, especially in a multidisciplinary team environment
• Previous modeling work in biology or biomedicine is a plus.

Selection process

Selection methods: The selection methods will be the following: Curriculum (50%) and academic background compatibility evaluation (40%), motivation letter (10%). Shortlisted candidates may be invited for an interview.

Announcement/ notification of the results: The final evaluation results will be communicated to all applicants by email.
