Risk and Safety Lead

POSITION SUMMARY
This position is open in August. The Risk and Safety Lead is a
- time risk management and safety role in a remote, North Cascades retreat center accessible only by foot or boat. We seek candidates eager to live
- time in Holden Village and to develop, maintain, and implement risk management systems for staff and guests. The role requires technical knowledge of safety standards, creativity, and passion for ensuring safety in remote wilderness. Responsibilities include establishing safety goals, coordinating trainings, managing emergency plans, and advising on safety across departments, including occupational, wilderness travel, transportation, hazardous materials, medical safety, mental health, and fire safety. Safety culture and training are key, and the role involves leadership and role modeling in incident learning and prevention.
MAJOR FUNCTIONS
- Design and implement risk management strategies tailored to each department, monitor effectiveness, and adjust as needed.
- Develop and evaluate safety initiatives such as seasonal safety topics.
- Collaborate with departments and teams, advising on safety regulations, assisting with risk planning, updating safety programs, and working with the Fire Marshal and village leadership.
- Serve on and manage Holden’s Workplace Safety Committee, including scheduling, safety audits, and hazard action plans.
- Manage Holden’s Incident Command Program, including scheduling, training, emergency response, and external agency coordination.
- Provide safety trainings for staff, including orientations, drills, and specialized courses like Wilderness First Aid.
- Maintain safety documentation, handle claims, reports, and ensure compliance with OSHA and other standards.
- Coordinate with the Transport Lead to ensure safe transportation practices, including seasonal risk adjustments.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIREMENTS
Applicants should have a
- year degree or at least two years of related experience, knowledge of safety standards, proficiency with Microsoft Office, leadership, communication, organizational skills, and experience in project collaboration and mediation. Additional qualifications include wilderness medicine, safety certifications, and hazardous waste management experience, which are advantageous.
