CALL FOR APPLICATIONS FOR THE AWARD OF A RESEARCH GRANT UNDER THE RESEARCH PROJECT ALGARVE-FEDER-00853600-SYREN-17135 – “NEW PERSPECTIVES ON YOUTH ENGAGEMENT IN COASTAL RISK”

Title: Research Grant for Bachelor’s Degree Holder

Applications are invited for a Research Grant for a Bachelor’s degree holder within the project ALGARVE-FEDER-00853600-SYREN-17135 – “New perspectives on youth engagement in coastal risk”, funded by the Algarve Regional Operational Programme, the Lisbon Regional Operational Programme, and the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), under the following conditions:

Research field: Education Sciences, Geography, Geosciences, Environmental Sciences, Communication Sciences, or related fields.

Admission Requirements:Bachelor’s degree in one of the scientific areas covered by this notice; Proficiency in Portuguese (mandatory) and English (preferred). Preference will be given to candidates with experience in research projects in the field of education sciences, knowledge of coastal dynamics, experience with data collection methods in the social sciences, and science communication.

Work Plan:The research aims to explore new perspectives on youth engagement in coastal risk. The main tasks will include: (1) Participation in the literature review; (2) Data collection, including the administration of a questionnaire on coastal risk in formal education contexts; (3) Data processing and analysis;(4) Participation in project organization and dissemination of results.

Duration of the grant: The initial duration is 6 months, starting in November 2025, renewable up to a maximum of 16 months.

Monthly Maintenance Allowance:€1, 040. 98, in accordance with the current table of FCT grants in Portugal ( https://www.fct. pt/financiamento/programas-de-financiamento/bolsas/ ). This amount may be supplemented by Voluntary Social Security contributions (if the grant holder chooses to enrol) and Personal Accident Insurance. Payments are made monthly by bank transfer.

Candidate Evaluation:In accordance with nº3 of the Article 11 of the FCT Research Grants Regulation, candidates will be evaluated by the following criteria: a) Academic and curricular merit (0–20; 40%); b) Demonstrated experience or motivation related to coastal dynamics, particularly coastal risk, or to education sciences (0–20; 20%); c) Demonstrated work experience in the collection and analysis of quantitative and/or qualitative data in the social sciences (0–20; 10%); d) Demonstration of experience or motivation related to education and science communication (0–20; 10%); e) Interview (0–20; 20%).

Only the first three candidates on the list ranked by the sum of criteria (a), (b), (c), and (d) will be admitted for interview.

The tender jury will comprise the following members (all holding a Ph
D):

- Ana Matias (Member) – Assistant Researcher, CIMA – University of Algarve

- Bruno Pinto (Member) – Assistant Researcher, MARE – University of Lisbon

Publication/Notification of Results:The final results will be publicised in an alphabetically ordered list at the Escola Superior de Educação João de Deus (secretariat), and successful candidates will also be notified by email. A reserve list will be established for possible replacements within the project’s eligibility period.

Application Period and Procedure:Applications are open from 20/10/2025 to 31/10/2025.

Applications must be formally submitted and accompanied by the following documents:

• Official ID document (or equivalent legal proof). For
  - Portuguese nationals: residence permit, permanent residence certificate, or
  - term resident status valid at the start date of the scholarship (or declaration of honour at application stage, with formal proof required before contracting);
• Copies of academic degree certificates, including final average and, where possible, full transcript of grades;
• Proof of registration of the recognition of academic degrees awarded by foreign higher education institutions, together with the record of conversion of the respective final classification to the Portuguese grading scale, if required under the funding scheme. Candidates placed in an eligible position must complete these formalities by the deadline set for the signing of the contract, otherwise they will be excluded from the selection process;
• Passport or identification card for European applicants (copy);
• Motivation letter clearly outlining the candidate’s skills and experience in relation to the evaluation criteria;
• Any other relevant supporting documents;
• Application form (Requerimento_Bolsa_SYREN_ESEJD), signed and dated, addressed to the Chair of the Selection Panel. Documents required for contracting the grant:

• Copy of civil, tax, and social security identification documents (where applicable);
• Document proving the country of residence, residence permit, or other legally equivalent document, where applicable, valid at the start date of the scholarship;
• Supporting documents confirming that the candidate meets the requirements for the respective type of grant, namely proof of enrolment in a study cycle or a
  - degree course and/or proof of the academic qualifications required for the scholarship, where applicable;
• Declaration from the supervisor(s) taking responsibility for supervising the work plan, in accordance with article 5º-A of the Statute of the Scientific Research Grant Holder, as well as guaranteeing the necessary conditions for the proper development of the work and compliance with the obligations set out in article 13º of the Statute.
• Declaration of commitment to the regime of exclusive dedication.

Complaints and Appeals:

Regarding the draft decision on the award of the requested grant, candidates may, if they wish, make representations in a hearing of interested parties within 10 working days, in accordance with the Administrative Procedure Code.

Candidates may also complain to the competent body within 10 working days against any act or omission of the selection panel.

An appeal against the final decision referred to above may be lodged within 15 working days. Alternatively, an appeal may be submitted to the highest executive body of the funding entity within 30 working days, in both cases following notification.

Contract:

A grant agreement will be signed with the selected candidate(s) upon receipt of all required documents.

Evaluation of the Grant Holder(s):

At the end of each period of the scholarship contract, the work carried out by the grant holder will be evaluated by the supervisor using the following criteria:

a) Assessment of the report for each scholarship period, detailing the activities undertaken and the resulting technical or scientific outputs.

b) Compliance with the project schedule and deadlines for each period, as defined at the start of the period and assessed through the record of emails with attached deliverables.

c) The evaluation will be expressed qualitatively as: negative, insufficient, sufficient, positive, or very positive.
