Senior AI Scientist – Lisbon (Hybrid) Lisboa

Overview

Senior AI Scientist position for an international AI startup partnering to advance agentic AI systems from research to production. Location: Lisbon, Portugal (Hybrid). Industry: Information Technology (AI & Machine Learning). Start date: ASAP.

Your Role

As a Senior AI Scientist, you will take ownership of strategic AI initiatives, ensuring models evolve from research prototypes to
- ready autonomous systems.

• Leading research, prototyping, and development of features advancing the Agentic LAM.
• Driving initiatives in:
  • Transformers and attention mechanisms
  • Fine-tuning and optimisation methods
  • Reinforcement learning (RLHF, reward modelling)
  • AI alignment, safety, and interpretability
• Overseeing the full model lifecycle: data ingestion → training → validation → deployment → monitoring
• Designing and implementing scalable architectures, including Modular LLMs and Mixture-of-Experts setups
• Building and maintaining evaluation metrics aligned with product and research goals
• Developing testbeds and behavioural suites to assess
  - term agent performance
• Integrating autonomous capabilities:
  • Autonomous code execution
  • Structured memory and
    - repair loops
  • Toolformer-style API integrations
• Collaborating with engineering teams to ensure robust deployment via Ray, Kubernetes, and CI/CD pipelines

Qualifications

You should have deep expertise in at least one or two of the following, with familiarity in the rest:

• Core competencies: Transformers, attention mechanisms,
  - tuning methods
• Reinforcement learning (RLHF, reward modelling)
• Alignment, safety, and interpretability
• Modular LLM design, Mixture-of-Experts, scalable architectures
• Auto-evaluation frameworks

Tooling & engineering skills:

• Advanced Python and Py
  Torch
• Distributed training, quantised inference, batching, and caching
• Production infrastructure: Ray, Kubernetes, CI/CD for ML
• Proven ability to lead research initiatives and mentor junior team members
• Strong track record of delivering AI features from concept to production
• No strict degree requirements, impact, skills, and leadership matter most
