About Siemens Foundational Technology Department
Siemens Foundational Technology is the central
- house research unit at Siemens and, as such, occupies an outstanding position within Siemens' R&D facilities. It acts as a strategic partner to support Siemens’ business units with R&D services, protects the company’s intellectual property, coordinates collaboration with top universities worldwide, and supports standardization activities in all business units and regions. Through its R&D activities in Germany, USA, Portugal, China, India, Japan, and Eastern Europe, Siemens Foundational Technology helps secure the company’s technological future and strengthen its ambition.
Our team in Portugal
We are a team of R&D engineers in the field of embedded devices. Being an internal R&D department allows us to shape our research portfolio to support future needs of Siemens’ business units, as well as contribute to

- source projects. Our scope of applications is wide: from
- mobility to utility infrastructure monitoring, and, of course, industrial automation. Being on the edge of modern technology, we focus on best practices and strive to bring the

Your mission will be…
- Design and implement software for embedded systems
- Design software architectures in compliance with modern design patterns
- Develop Po
Cs and prototypes of embedded devices with focus on reliability and performance optimization - Support HW engineers in electronics development tasks
- Perform requirements engineering, drive workshops with colleagues and customers in scope of project execution
- Evaluate and use
- party components (Open
Source) during development - Define test plans and perform acceptance and validation, as well as field experimentations
- Collaborate with international team of colleagues in our technology area
- Continuously grow as an expert and share knowledge with colleagues
We are looking for someone with…
- A MSc. and/or Ph
D in computer science, electrical engineering, mathematics, physics or engineering sciences - At least 5+ years of experience in professional software/hardware development
- Excellent knowledge of programming languages such as C and C++, coding techniques and design patterns
- Experience with embedded
- time operating systems (Free
RTOS, Zephyr, …) on various platforms (Arm Cortex-M, RISC-V, ESP) - Experience with PCB design for digital and analogue systems
- Knowledge of
- level interfaces (SPI, I2C, UART, RS-232, RS-485), protocols and hardware peripherals - Familiarity with compilers (GCC), build systems (Make, CMake) and version control systems (GIT)
- Familiarity with Python, Golang
- Experience with and active use of agile software development methodologies as well as continuous integration and deployment
- Knowledge of software and hardware testing methodologies
- Communication skills and readiness to work in a team as well as autonomously
- Fluent in English
Would be beneficial experience with
- Rust programming language
- Certification and safety
- OSS contributions
- Mechanical design
