What will be your role
We are looking for a Senior Performance Engineer to join our team in a strategic project with a major banking client — one of the largest in Portugal. This is a
- impact role at the heart of the bank’s application ecosystem, which includes over 600 applications ranging from legacy mainframe systems to
- native services.
You won’t be alone:
there’s already a small internal team working on performance engineering — but with 600 apps, two people can only do so much. That’s where you come in.
Your mission will be to support performance analysis across heterogeneous systems, guide teams in diagnosing bottlenecks, and define clear,
- driven recommendations — whether it’s related to application logic, infrastructure limitations, or capacity planning.
You’ll be working with teams that couldn’t be more different — from Cobol veterans in their 50s maintaining
- critical mainframe apps, to agile squads building modern digital experiences. Your ability to communicate across generations, backgrounds, and technical stacks will be as critical as your technical skills.
What you’ll be doing:
- Analyzing system performance of
- prem and
- based applications - Identifying performance issues through testing, monitoring, and diagnostics
- Executing and/or guiding performance testing for legacy and modern applications
- Supporting infrastructure assessment:
e. G. , recognizing when underpowered frontend servers are bottlenecking KPIs - Recommending capacity upgrades and architectural changes when needed
- Collaborating with development, infrastructure, and ops teams to ensure performance best practices
- Bridging communication between highly distinct teams — from legacy to agile — with clarity and diplomacy
- Contributing to systemic improvements in how performance is measured, addressed, and governed across hundreds of apps
Who will work by your side
You’ll join the Advance
Works team and work in close collaboration with the client’s internal performance engineers and broader IT organization. This includes development teams working on legacy COBOL systems and others developing modern apps using agile methodologies.
You’ll bring a fresh, pragmatic perspective and help accelerate the client’s efforts to optimize system performance at scale. You’ll have the autonomy to shape how this discipline evolves within the bank — while always having a supportive, experienced team by your side.
What should you bring to the team
- 6+ years of experience in performance engineering or systems analysis
- Strong background in both development and infrastructure (hybrid profile is essential)
- Experience with on-prem and cloud environments (Azure is a plus)
- Familiarity with application architectures across legacy (e. G. , COBOL) and modern stacks
- Experience executing performance tests and interpreting results
- Deep understanding of systems diagnostics, including CPU, memory, storage, and network impacts on performance
- Capacity planning experience — ability to justify infrastructure needs based on KPIs
- Strong communication skills:
you must be able to talk with technical and
- technical audiences alike - Ability to navigate different team cultures — from mainframe to agile squads
- A calm, methodical mindset — with curiosity, resilience, and a drive to make things better
- Availability to work hybrid in Lisbon
