Role Purpose
• To promote and ensure quality teaching and effective learning of English across a range of young learner and adult programs.
• To support the wider aims of the British Council and its cultural relations mission.
Main Accountabilities
- Plan, prepare and deliver high quality English language teaching that meets the needs of different customer groups taking into account individual learning styles.
- Monitor progress and provide regular feedback to help manage students’ performance throughout the course, and actively promote learner autonomy.
- Contribute to the development, evaluation, and improvement of English language courses, materials and related services, in order to meet students’ needs by actively working as a member of the teaching team.
- Actively engage in professional development and performance management to ensure quality and high standards in teaching and learning, and maintain British Council’s position at the forefront of best ELT practices.
- Ensure safeguarding and guidelines are applied and upheld in line with standards and policy for areas such as child protection, equal opportunity and diversity, health and safety, and bribery and corruption.
Qualifications
- Undergraduate and/or University degree
- Cambridge CELTA and/or Trinity Cert
TESOL - Recognised diploma in EFL, e. g. , Cambridge DELTA and/or Trinity Diploma TESOL
- Additional specialist qualifications such as PGCE and/or B. Ed in Primary, TYLEC, Nile Teaching English in Pre-Primary education
Work Experience
- Equivalent to 2 years’ experience
- certificate (CELTA and/or Trinity Cert TESOL). - Experience teaching at least three of the following age groups: Early Years (4-5), Primary (6-9), Lower Secondary (10-12), Upper Secondary (13-17), Adults (18+), with respective hours.
- Experience in exam preparation at B2 First, C1 Advanced, C2 Proficiency (400+ hours).
- Training and teaching for corporate classes/in-company.
- One-to-one teaching experience.
Contract Details
- Duration: Fixed-term for 12 months, with potential renewal based on performance.
- Teaching hours: 18 hours per week.
Local Restrictions on Employment
- Applicants must be EU nationals with the right to work in Portugal.
- Meal allowance: €6. 50 per working day (excluding August).
- Onboarding allowances: applicable if hired from outside Portugal, including a
- way flight and up to two weeks’ accommodation. - Annual paid leave of 35 days plus public holidays, with leave timing determined by the centre’s operations.
- Medical allowance: Enrolled in a local medical insurance scheme covering 80% of costs.

- Salary: €1591-€1834 per month.
