Volunteer
Overview
Support our riders during their therapeutic riding sessions – a rewarding opportunity to help individuals with disabilities build confidence, physical strength, communication skills, and joy through interaction with horses.
Roles
- Horse Leader – You will take responsibility for leading the horse during the session. This includes walking and controlling the pace and direction of the horse while the rider mounts, rides, completes therapeutic exercises, and dismounts; maintaining close, calm control of the horse and anticipating any issues that may arise. Experience with horses is helpful but not required; comprehensive training and ongoing support are provided. This role suits someone confident and focused around animals, with a calm, observant manner.
- Side Walker – You will walk alongside the horse and rider, offering physical and emotional support. This includes helping with balance and stability when needed; encouraging and engaging the rider in
- up routines, mounted games, and therapeutic tasks; assisting with mounting and dismounting safely and positively. This role is ideal for friendly, supportive individuals who enjoy working with people. A good understanding of Portuguese is helpful for rider communication, but not essential – and it’s a great opportunity to practise your Portuguese.
Session Environment
Most sessions take place in our covered riding arena, specially adapted for therapeutic riding and accessibility. The space is sheltered and secure, creating a safe environment for both volunteers and participants. In good weather, sessions may include short guided walks around the surrounding area, including the stable yard and riding paths to provide variety and extra stimulation for the riders.
Commitment & Training
- Commitment: We ask volunteers to commit to a regular weekly day and to give as much notice as possible if they are unable to attend.
- Training: All training is provided and no prior experience is required.
Additional Information
This opportunity is suitable for individuals seeking meaningful volunteer work in a supportive,
- focused environment.
